A new baby or toddlers can be so exhausting that even when you go to bed you cannot sleep. It's an awful feeling when your limbs are aching with tiredness but you lye there your mind racing, unable to drop off. There are a number of things you can try.
Some people recommend getting up and doing a mundane task, but for a new Mom I think you are just too tired. A warm drink of milk and a bath will often help. When I am very busy I often write down tomorrow's tasks before turning off the light. Ordering the tasks gives a feeling of achievement and I can settle. Playing a relaxation tape may put you to sleep before it finishes. There are a number of free tapes available online, try dragonrising.com. I have found that doing the deep breathing exercise shown on the tapes is enough to send me to sleep.
If a new baby or toddler is exhausting you so much, don't be afraid to ask others for help. All new Moms have to go through the sleepless nights, but if you also have other children it can be very hard.
